Nanna Maaløe is a medical doctor (2011) and PhD (2019) from the University of Copenhagen. Since 2009, she has been involved in maternal health research in low- and middle-income countries, primarily in Tanzania. She currently holds a part-time postdoc position at University of Copenhagen, alongside her clinical work at Hvidovre University Hospital, where she specializes in gynaecology and obstetrics. 

Nanna Maaløe’s research focuses on maternal and perinatal health care at the frontline of resource-constrained health systems. She seeks to understand how care is provided, including how the broader context influences this, and to co-create related interventions with users and health providers. Thereby, her clinical goal is to assist health workers in providing best possible care within resource-constrained realities – realities that must not be accepted in the long run, but that do currently exist. Methodologically, she particularly focuses on approaches to such co-creation and evaluation of complex interventions in high-volume, low-resource maternity hospitals. Notably, avoiding a dangerous co-existence of too little, too late and too much, too soon care is especially challenging in such congested urban hospitals. Moreover, she aims at assisting in disclosing, as well as closing, the gap between frontline realities in low-resource health systems and how related health problems and solutions are framed at the global level.   

Nanna Maaløe’s PhD concerned co-creating and evaluating context-tailored clinical practice guidelines for maternity care and associated training in Zanzibar’s tertiary hospital (the PartoMa pilot study). Together with colleagues from Aga Khan University in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and VU University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands), she received a Danida Grant in 2018 to scale up and evaluate this PartoMa intervention in the five highest volume maternity hospitals in Dar es Salaam. Nanna Maaløe is now the Co-Principal Investigator of this PartoMa scale-up study.
