Ph.d. Course in Critical Reading of Scientific Literature

Participants will learn to evaluate the quality of scientific literature.
Checklists support judging the validity of eight different types of study designs: randomized trials, systematic reviews, diagnostic studies, and case-control studies, plus four study design types selected by the participants according to their interests (cohort studies, guidelines, health technology assessments, qualitative studies, etc.).
Participants can also suggest articles of interest for evaluation and present their own PhD study designs for discussion.

Classes run from 13.00 to 17.00 on Mondays (starting with two successive sessions Monday - Tuesday), usually with 3 weeks between classes.
Each study type is discussed in small groups using an example, and another paper is given for evaluation as homework.
The teaching is in English. Checklists are available also in Danish, and small group sessions can be held in Danish if participants agree.

Teachers: Professor Marjukka Mäkelä, assistant professor John Brodersen and assistant professor (emeritus) Klaus Witt.
